Everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue driving independence and to explore driving retirement with dignity.
Our competent and caring therapists strive to promote and support driving independence whenever possible and counsel compassionately when driving retirement is recommended.
Examples of diagnoses referred to our program may include:
- Cerebral Vascular Accident
- Mild Cognitive Impairment or Dementia
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Neurological Conditions (Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease)
- Visual Deficits
- Peripheral Neuropathy
- Amputee
- High Functioning Autism
- Cerebral Palsy
- Spina Bifida
Individuals who can benefit from this program:
OLDER DRIVERS
- Are you concerned about a family member who has difficulty driving due to age-related changes?
- Are you or a family member having difficulty due to changes in medical status or emerging health challenges?
PHYSICALLY DISABLED
- Have you had a change in your mobility or functional status due to a medical condition and wonder if you might be a good candidate for driving with adaptive equipment?
- Have you been told you cannot drive a car in the traditional way due to a physical impairment?
NOVICE DRIVERS
- Is your novice driver not a good fit for a traditional driving school due to physical, visual, or cognitive challenges?

- Driver Training (Adaptive Equipment [dual control vehicle that can be equipped with hand controls, left foot accelerator, one-handed steering devices], Compensatory strategies, Novice drivers with specialized driving needs)
- Pre-Driver Evaluations
- Behind the Wheel Evaluations
- Vehicle Modification Prescriptions
Staff & Program Credentials
This program is staffed by Occupational Therapists who are also:
- Certified Driver Rehab Specialists (CDRS) with the Association of Driver Rehab Specialists (ADED) www.aded.net
- Licensed Certified Driving Instructors (CDI) with the state of New Jersey
- Licensed driver training school with the state of New Jersey (LICENSE # 20993C)
- Approved vendor of the NJ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR)
Pricing/Costs
Not all insurers cover driver evaluation and training as medically necessary. Check with your insurance carrier to determine if this service is a covered benefit. Unless approved through the NJ Division of Vocational Rehab (DVR) office or a worker’s compensation claim, most clients self-pay for driver rehabilitation services. Driver rehabilitation is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid. Services and cost estimates will be fully explained and disclosed up front prior to any services being scheduled.
